Update: December 2019

It’s traditional around this time of year for One Large Popcorn, Please! to deliver a traditional Christmas message and the latest news from yours truly, so here goes.

First and foremost – and I’m aware this is said much too often – thank you very much for continuing to support this blog over the past few months. It has been a very busy time in my life and I’ve only been able to write intermittently, with other commitments taking precedence, but I’m hoping to change that over the next few weeks. More on that in a moment.

Second, I wanted to provide an update on what’s been happening in my own life outside of blogging. Throughout 2019, I have been devoting myself to the role of Executive Producer of Art Smitten, a radio programme airing on the Melbourne-based, youth-oriented radio station SYN. The show has seen some huge changes under my stewardship, including a move from digital-only to FM and being listed on the Great Australian Podcast directory; now though, I have been superseded in the position and handed the role onto a pair of very capable producers for 2020, which has allowed me to take on another position at SYN.

Yes, I’ve been given a promotion of sorts, because for the next twelve months, I’ll be acting as one of the three Radio Managers, responsible for producing SYN’s brand-new shows and nationwide programmes, in addition to handling the timetable for each season. Although this change brings some nerves with it, I am keen on working in this role and look forward to seeing where it takes me.

Another role I’ll be undertaking over the next few weeks is producing my own story for All the Best, a radio programme broadcast by FBi Radio in Sydney. This long-gestating project will see me talking about my time as a male librarian in a female-dominated industry, interviewing colleagues and learning if, or why, the profession is becoming more male-centric. All of the raw audio has been recorded for the project – now it’s just a matter of turning that audio into a coherent story.

While this undertaking will consume much of my free time, I don’t expect it to be as demanding as being the producer of a biweekly radio programme, which should allow more time to devote to One Large Popcorn, Please! as well as the two other podcasts I have been contributing to, Right on Track and Film 101.

With regard to content on this blog, over the next fortnight I’ll be making the most of this Christmas/New Year break and spending time with family, while continuing to write reviews of movies (including some Awards contenders) and work on my Best of the Decade series, which is scheduled to continue posting weekly from January 8th.

That covers pretty much everything that’s happening in my life. All that’s left for me to do now is wish you, dear readers, a Merry Christmas and a Safe, Happy New Year. 🙂

– Tom.
